Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.66% By Investing.com

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.66% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET), which rose 13.49% or 1.24 points to trade at 10.43 at the close. Empire Company Ltd (TSX:EMPa) added 6.38% or 2.35 points to end at 39.18 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX:ERF) was up 5.86% or 0.38 points to 6.87 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB), which lost 5.14% or 0.670 points to trade at 12.360 in late trade. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) declined 4.20% or 60.04 points to end at 1371.02 and MAG Silver Corp (TSX:MAG) shed 4.24% or 0.91 points to 20.54.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 635 to 421 and 122 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.40% or 6.90 to $1723.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.58% or 0.37 to hit $64.38 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.49% or 0.33 to trade at $67.85 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7915, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6641.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 91.847.
